Founder of Illumination and several other publications on Medium with over 100,000 followers, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, is a big supporter of contributors, but became disheartened with the drop in income potential from the Medium platform. So he moved to Substack.
Then he used LinkedIn to build his audience. Now, it is his favorite tool to convert free members to paid.
These 5 tips will not only help specifically with Substack, but with any newsletter growth.
1) List your newsletter in the Experience section of your profile. Note how Dr. Yildiz does it in the image above.
2) Create a newsletter on LinkedIn to share articles and curations. LinkedIn will invite all of your Connections to subscribe with your first issue, as well as each new follower in the future.
3) Join LinkedIn groups, or start one of your own. Share your thought leadership ideas, but pay attention to each group’s rules about self-promotion. Dr. Yildiz created the Substack Mastery group, for instance.
4) Put a link to your Substack (or other newsletter) in your group. Share a link in other groups as permitted, and to issues of interest to each group.
5) Keep in mind that any post with media (photos or video) gets better distribution by the LinkedIn algorithm, such as an image of a book cover.
